Johannesburg, September 2019 – UNION’s wide range of locksets, popularly used in private and public facilities and manufactured in the production facility in Johannesburg, are renowned for their high quality and durability. UNION’s Gower lockset range was recently put to the test to confirm its quality and reliability claim, and unsurprisingly, the locksets came out on top! They were tested in the ASSA ABLOY test laboratory, and were still going strong after 1 million cycles, still fully functional and working perfectly.
The cycle test is based on a door being opened and closed over and over again to ensure a lock and handle set keeps working. 1,000,000 cycles means that if you open and close your door ten times a day, your UNION lockset could be safely working for well over 273 years – making this product the ultimate fit-and-forget lockset.
This range of UNION Gower locksets is locally manufactured in South Africa, at the ASSA ABLOY factory in Roodepoort. Speaking to the Chief Operations Officer Africa of ASSA ABLOY, Heidi Morris, she expressed pride in the team’s achievement saying, “We are extremely happy with the fact that the UNION Gower Lockset has surpassed 1 million cycles on the test rig. This shows the outstanding quality and reliability of our locks which are manufactured right here. The factory has recently received a major investment in automation, with collaborative robots to improve manufacturing processes and speed. With this process automation introduction, these locksets are manufactured on the new lock body assembly line which is a collaborative set of robots, working hand in hand with our production team.

The lock body within these locksets is powder-coated in the UNION red coating to protect the lock against corrosion, which ensures that it retains its functionality in inland or coastal regions, while also making it easy for customers to easily distinguish the product in-store.
