Industrial Design Intern

Job Summary

The Industrial Design Intern will get full exposure to all areas of the design process in a globally situated corporate environment, working under direct supervision within an Industrial Design Team. The ideal candidate has excellent sketching/conceptualization skills (traditional and digital), and is developing in 3D CAD, communication, and judgmental skills with a desire to learn.   The candidate must be available to work 40 hours per week (8 hours per day).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the Industrial Design team, as an Industrial Design Intern you will participate in the conceptualization and development of new products. The work in this role is of appropriate difficulty and scope such that it will be completed with specific and detailed instruction as needed from the design staff.

• Creates Aesthetic Design Solutions
  1. Creates aesthetic designs that are aligned with the business strategies and departmental goals. 
  2. Provides current trend right designs that meet our internal and external customer needs.
  3. Communicates design intent through 2D/3D drawings and project documentation to support market research and product development.  Creates 3D CAD models of parts and assemblies.
• Concept Development and Problem Solving
  1. Develops and refines concepts and/or specifications to meet project requirements and brand guidelines.  Begins to integrate industrial design and requirements for cost solutions.
  2. Applies fundamental knowledge of Human Factors, Ergonomics, Usability Analysis, and Product Materials and Manufacturing Processes to personal and Work Team assignments.
  3. Applies fundamental knowledge of User Interface (UI) & User Experience (UX) methodologies to personal and Work Team assignments.  Applies fundamental knowledge of color, texture, finish and graphics, when required. 
  4. Works with engineers to ensure aesthetic design is properly implemented in the final product release.  Begins to create Industrial Design geometry releases.
• Visualization/Prototyping
  1. Creates 3D visualizations to support market research.
  2. Creates design and form study models to progress industrial design concepts.  Coordinate internal and/or external resources in creating physical models from the CAD data.  (i.e. 3D Print, Stereolithography, Finished Model, & CNC services).
• Delivers functional and/or aesthetic innovation through industrial design projects and/or activities.  Develops advanced industrial design solutions using fundamental innovative methodologies and execution.
• Supports the Americas Residential organization in design activities outside of the product development process.  For example customer tours, packaging concepts, exhibition design, customer collaborations, etc.

Education and Experience Profile

• The candidate needs to be a current Industrial Design student that has completed a minimum of a fourth term/semester or in junior/senior level.

Required Skill:

• The Intern role is for minimum fourth term students or equivalent experience.
• Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
• Well skilled with Adobe Photoshop
• Experience creating photo-realistic renderings in Keyshot preferred
• Knowledge of 3D modeling / rendering software and ability to learn solid modeling Creo/Alias a plus
• Proficient presentation abilities through tight sketches and renderings.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Good foundation in design methodology and problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable with and quick to learn new software programs and procedures
• Ability to support prototyping through rapid & hand prototyping processes.
• UI/UX design background / experience is a plus

Work Environment:

Working conditions are normal for an office environment.   The candidate will be working in both a design studio & shop environment creating 2D concepts & 3D prototypes.  Opportunities to work within cross functional teams with exposure to marketing, engineering (mechanical & electrical), & manufacturing functions.
