ASSA ABLOY transforms local community garden

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions have completed a volunteering project as part of their ‘ASSA ABLOY in the Community’ initiative, where volunteers have been transforming a local community garden in the heart of Willenhall positively – which will have a positive impact on hundreds of people in the area.

Willenhall CHART is a community centre that aims to improve the quality of life for local people by providing a positive environment, where everyone feels welcome, warm and safe. Unfortunately, during the global pandemic their much-loved community garden became an overgrown, unusable space. However, thanks to the ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions team of volunteers it’s now been given a new lease of life.

The team’s objective was to restore the community garden to its former beauty, where local residents can come to relax and reflect. Through teamwork, collaboration and some impressive gardening/DIY skills the space has been totally transformed.

From clearing overgrown brambles, giving the patio a much-needed jetwash, repairing walls to adding the finishing touches. Throughout the week the team also painted fences, planted an array of flowers/shrubs and added solar lights making the space a calm, tranquil area that can now be enjoyed in the evenings too.

To support sustainability, bio-diversity features were installed (insect houses, compost heaps and bird boxes) with corresponding infographics to explain how each feature helps support natural eco-systems, which will be used by CHART activity groups.

ASSA ABLOY have also donated a variety of tools and gardening equipment that can be utilised by volunteers to maintain the garden. Alongside this, ABLOY UK donated an innovative SMARTair system containing SMARTair Escutcheon lock to secure inside fitness areas and also a SMARTair iGate Padlock to provide additional security to help support and streamline the process of accessing these facilities.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the team of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions volunteers for the work they have undertaken on the community garden at our CHART Centre. The impact this project has made on the community is huge, not only for those who use it as a quiet place to sit and rest, but for the wider groups using the centre to undertake different activities.

The groups will include Learning Support, Parent and Toddlers and the over 50’s Luncheon Club to name just a few. Also, to celebrate King Charles III coronation the Parents and Toddlers group will be decorating the garden on 9th May to host a Coronation Afternoon Tea Party.

Once again, thank you for all you have done – your support has been invaluable to our charity.’ – Wayne Palmer, Business Support Area Manager, CHART

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions are committed to helping local communities and aim to support many more projects like this over the next year.
