Getting unhinged and need information?

Type of hinges

Hinges play a crucial role in the functionality and design of doors, offering support and smooth movement.

From traditional butt hinges to sophisticated concealed hinges, a wide variety caters to different needs, from domestic to heavy-duty commercial applications.

  • Butt hinge

Supplied as non-handed complete assembled hinge with frame and door leaves encapsulated by end caps. Available with different bearing types. Traditional design preferred by many.

  • Ball bearing butt hinges

Equipped with ball bearings in the knuckle of the hinge to reduce friction. Strong and durable, ball bearing butt hinges are a minimum require meant for large, heavy doors. Around the central pin there are ball bearings which create a permanently lubricated surface area, this allows for doors to swing smoothly with less force required.

  • Brushed bearing butt hinge

High performance bushed bearing butt hinges are suitable for severe duty applications for doors that are subject to frequent misuse. Suitable for 120kg doors mass with congruent fixing patterns that spread the load of the door more effectively within the timber.

  • Journal supported hinge

Suitable for heavy duty applications and for use on doors that are subject to a high frequency of use by the public with little incentive to exercise care. Generally used within healthcare projects.

  • Lift off hinge

Supplied as handed in 2 parts for final doorset assembly on site. Frame leaf knuckle includes male pin to engage with bore in female knuckle within the door leaf. Available with different bearing types. Enables frames and doors to be made, shipped and fitted separately during the build as well as easy ongoing maintenance.

  • Slim knuckle hinge

Suitable for use on standard internal doorsets, predominantly for domestic doors but can be used in some instances on commercial buildings where appropriate.

  • Security hinge

Ideal for high use public areas, these are generally found on exterior doors. The hinge features interlocking lugs or pins (dog bolt) on the leaf of the hinge which locate into a recess in frame leaf, preventing the door being removed in the event of the hinge pin being attacked.

  • Concealed hinge

Perfect for high end projects, as the hinge will be hidden away between the doors and frame to provide a clean aesthetic appearance.

Application examples

The below will give examples of the specific environments and applications where each type is best suited:

  • Butt hinges, with various bearing types, are popular for their classic design.
  • Ball bearing butt hinges minimise friction, ideal for large, heavy doors, ensuring smooth operation.
  • Brushed bearing butt hinges are suitable for severe duty applications, handling significant door mass.
  • Journal supported and lift-off hinges cater to high-frequency use, with the latter facilitating easy maintenance.
  • Slim knuckle hinges suit standard internal doors, while security hinges enhance protection in public areas.
  • Concealed hinges provide a sleek, unobtrusive option for high-end projects, hiding the mechanism for a clean aesthetic.

Each hinge type ensures efficient and secure door operation in different environments.
