London University’s Champion Hill site

The provision of security for university accommodation requires careful consideration. Students often own valuable equipment and possessions and, according to official police data, those at London University campuses are more likely to fall victim to crime than students in other institutions around the country. It was therefore essential that the door hardware at Champion Hill was in keeping with the building’s high-standard specifications to ensure maximum protection of the student population.

The high-frequency use of student accommodation also meant a robust and flexible technical solution was required, while ensuring consistency with the project’s modern aesthetics.

ASSA ABLOY was commissioned to deliver extensive access and security solutions at London University’s Champion Hill site.

ASSA ABLOY fitted the innovative Aperio^® Access Control solution on 2,300 door sets throughout the new residence, providing university authorities with real-time audits and instant updates of access restrictions. It also installed the RFID wireless door control solution, which allows for the simple upgrade of mechanical locks so they can communicate with a complete access control system. Additionally, a range of locks, deadlocks and 1,000 Series door furniture from Group were used. These components are ideal for the complex demands of student accommodation, while also in keeping with Champion Hill’s aesthetics and environment.

A range of ASSA ABLOY’s electromagnetic hold-open devices and DC500A door closers with leading Cam Motion^® technology were also installed throughout the main corridors and student entrances. These solutions provided safe passage around the building while meeting the requirements of the local building regulations.

In addition, Group brand ASSA supplied patented Master Key System cylinders to ensure the desired levels of security were achieved.

ASSA ABLOY’s tailored response provided London University with a simple and intelligent way of upgrading the controllability and security level of their Champion Hill accommodation.

While also solving key management issues through the use of ASSA’s master key system, these changes and improvements will help to keep students and property safe throughout the new residence.
