eCLIQ safeguards critical infrastructure in Upper Austria

Challenge

For over a century, K&F Drack (KFD) has been closely associated with the Almtal Valley in Upper Austria. Founded as a sawmill in 1899, this fourthgeneration family company is now the local expert for all things energy, electrotechnology, metal and wood. With expansion of the power grid, KFD has also become an important electricity supplier to the region. They supply around 1,800 households, 100 agricultural and 300 commercial businesses as well as 12 industrial consumers.

Key requirements for KFD’s new locking solution included:

  • Reliable security for 9 hydroelectric plants plus an approx. 130km pipeline network with 45 transformer stations
  • A focus on flexibility in installation and use, with a system which should involve as little maintenance as possible
  • Technology which matches the company’s ethos of cautious and respectful interaction with nature, people and the environment

Solution

With the eCLIQ locking system, KFD chose an ASSA ABLOY electronic security solution widely adopted at critical infrastructure sites across Europe — and which can be expanded, combined and retrofitted according to individual requirements. Based on award-winning CLIQ access control technology, the eCLIQ locking system is built around precision-engineered wireless locks and high-end microelectronics. A battery inside each key powers the wide range of programmable cylinders and padlocks — and secures every data transfer.

Robust and durable, eCLIQ cylinders are available for doors, cabinets, lifts, alarm boxes, machines and entrance gates. Looking after eCLIQ components is easy: an integrated lubricant reservoir ensures cylinders remain maintenancefree for up to 200,000 cycles.

An eCLIQ system is easy to operate and programme for many reasons. For instance, administrators do not need to activate every locking cylinder individually in order to replace batteries. Power and communication with the cylinder are conducted via battery-powered keys and programming keys only.

CLIQ technology also enables a higher level of security and allows access authorisations to be granted flexibly. If a key gets lost, the locking authorisation is simply deleted from the system.
