The demand for sustainable access solutions is increasing as a result of the strong growth in green buildings and more sustainable urban environments. We aim to lead the industry towards a sustainable future by offering more sustainable products.
To accomplish this, sustainable innovation plays a key role in our innovation strategy. It states that all parts of ASSA ABLOY will actively develop sustainable products, and that we will be transparent to our customers by clearly declaring what impact our products have on the environment.
Our Sustainability Compass is integrated into our product development process and provides an understanding of sustainability-related design criteria. The goal is to make our product portfolio more sustainable.
The compass includes eight dimensions: raw materials, packaging, virgin material, end-of-life reusability, recyclability, in-life energy consumption, carbon footprint, and financial cost.
Each dimension is evaluated from a life cycle perspective and the goal is to have a lower impact than the previous product. These areas are tracked and communicated among internal stakeholders involved in the product innovation process.
ASSA ABLOY´s product sustainability performance is verified independently to ensure credibility. Third-party verifiers audit and validate claims regarding the sustainability attributes of our products and solutions. Customers request this information to make informed purchasing decisions.
Sustainability attributes are disclosed through various means, such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), Health Product Declarations (HPDs) and Declare labels. As of 2022, we had 299 EPDs from all major product groups. These documents support customers in achieving green certifications like LEED and BREEAM.
To support our customers with their environmental targets, we are proactive in providing products that incorporate recycled or reused materials and components. This approach significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to using newly produced components and virgin materials. This commitment not only contributes to our own sustainability objectives but also aligns with our customers’ environmental targets, helping to generate new revenue streams.
Together with industry peers, we have completed the Circularity Development Program by Combient Pure. By participating in the program, ASSA ABLOY has gained insights into how to overcome common challenges when upscaling circular products to larger volumes.
