Around 8,000 personnel will be kept safe and sound during a major tunneling project under the River Thames thanks to Biosite’s Mosaic workforce management system.
Mosaic is our industry-leading database which keeps a log of workers’ competencies, providing clear visibility to ensure safe working practices on construction sites. In this case, Thames Tideway is a 25 kilometer tunnel that is being built under London to protect the River Thames from pollution by intercepting raw sewage spills and conveying them to a treatment works.
The project, delivered by a joint venture, Costain Vinci Bachy Soletanche (CVB), will involve 24 sites and eight construction companies over an eight year period. An access control system is therefore needed to ensure that only suitably-qualified personnel are able to enter certain areas on the sites, and that they are working in a safe environment.
By using all the functions Mosaic offers, CVB is able to guarantee that only trained and competent people enter high-risk areas such as shafts and confined spaces. Functions such as the personal digital assistant (PDA) and smartphone apps allow teams to ensure that tunnel workers sign for emergency evacuation equipment such as oxygen escape sets.
Mosaic obtains information on individuals and issues smart cards. In turn it can then track who is taking protective equipment and tools using its Asset module, ensuring that workers follow the necessary measures. Any equipment that requires training before use can also be logged and regulated. The smart card immediately indicates if someone has not had the necessary training to enter a restricted area – preventing them from going into a potentially dangerous situation underprepared.
Mosaic even flags up when people’s training courses and qualifications are in need of renewal. This saves a lot of time for administrative personnel, freeing them from laborious reporting and allowing them to focus on what they do best.
“Using Mosaic we are able to keep track of all individuals’ training and qualifications on site, at any time,” says Andrew Brown, Head of Safety and Wellbeing, Tideway East.
With the Asset module, equipment is tracked during in its use, encouraging its prompt return to the stores and saving up to 25 percent in protective equipment and tools costs in comparison with other Tideway projects not using the software.
