“ASSA ABLOY was chosen because we have confidence in the brand, there’s full test coverage and transparency in the supply chain”, says Cameron Duncanson, Maintenance Coordinator at the University of Edinburgh Estates Department.
Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is one of the oldest universities in the UK. It has five main campuses in the city of Edinburgh, which include many buildings of historical and architectural significance. The institution takes great pride in looking after the heritage sites, meaning that every piece of hardware, especially those in various openings, must have minimal impact on the buildings.
Recently, the university began to standardize door closers on all campuses since the existing ones had been supplied by a range of manufacturers.
The university has had a long partnership with ASSA ABLOY and to date we have installed 1,500 door closers. Or as Cameron noted, “ASSA ABLOY’s door closers have been used here for seven years without a single fault.”

Another crucial factor was our balanced product design, which made them blend in perfectly with the university’s diverse estate portfolio. Furthermore, the Cam-Motion technology behind the door closers makes sure that doors are shut properly, contributing to enhanced security, thermal efficiency and fire protection. Our products’ low opening force also enables greater access for various needs, including those with disabilities.
Perhaps, a major contributor to the university’s decision was ASSA ABLOY team’s dedication and customer-centric service.
“The estate managers were familiar with our range of products, but this time we could offer them a unique service - from start to finish,” says Richard Wilson, Product Manager, EMEIA Door Closer Product Unit at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions.
“At the start of the process, we developed a unique specification manual to showcase our range and demonstrated installation processes,” says Barry Harris, Regional Specification Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland.
Thanks to the support and guidance of our team, the University staff are more informed about the details of our product and can use them with confidence.
