How to retrofit a certified fire door with electronic access control

Fire doors represent a significant investment in building construction or upgrading. However, what happens if your building security needs change, and it becomes necessary to add access control at a later date?
Damage to the door or frame fabric may invalidate a fire certificate, leaving you with expense of rebuying and installing new doors.
For example, in Germany, the general retrofitting of escape route locking systems on fire doors is prohibited by 2009 regulations from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt), on “Permitted changes and additions to fire protection closures and fire protection closures with smoke protection properties in the modified approval procedure”.
Likewise, UK government fire door guidance pinpoints new physical holes among the threats to the effectiveness of fire door protection. Countries worldwide implement similar restrictions on modifying the fabric or a fire door, leaf or frame.
But there is a way to retrofit electronic access control to these doors without drilling new holes in the leaf or replacing the door altogether.

The Security Door Closer combines reliable, comfortable door closing with an integrated escape door strike. It easily retrofits doors with automated closing and electronic locking, without any need to wire the leaf.
A single cable connects the device with power. The installer can use existing drill holes for door closers to DIN EN 1154 (Supplement 1:2003-11). Without drilling, milling, filing or grinding, the leaf remains physically unchanged, which preserves door integrity and aesthetics.
If the fire door was already approved for door closers in accordance with DIN EN 1154, and pre-equipped with a corresponding drilling pattern, this is easily reused. Adapter plates enable existing fixing holes to be reused when replacing the guide rail.
By choosing this cost-efficient solution, building managers save the time, hassle and costs associated with replacing fire doors altogether.
