The first profile cylinder, which has been in successful use to date, was already developed and built in the 1920s. Around 100 years and a few mergers later, the IKON profile cylinders are still a traditional brand of the ASSA ABLOY Group produced with state-of-the-art and manual precision work – and now as electromechanical locking cylinders in the eCLIQ system as well. In the latest video on eCLIQ production in Goerzallee, Berlin, ASSA ABLOY provides new insights into the state-of-the-art production of the innovative locking system.
Nowadays, profile cylinders are installed in almost every apartment or house door. They are one of the most common forms of security door locks. The cornerstone for this was laid around 1920 in Ihringshausen near Kassel. There, Sylvester Wöhrle, engineer at Hahn AG for optics and mechanics, developed the first profile cylinder in Germany, which was registered as a patent in 1924 and became the most widely used locking system in Europe thanks to its ease of use and robustness.
The fact that the locking system and its electronic successor eCLIQ are still one of the extremely high-quality and reliable in the industry today is primarily due to the nearly one hundred years of experience and cylinder competence made in Berlin. The new video clearly shows how high-precision manual precision work, a great deal of finesse and state-of-the-art production and assembly technologies complement each other perfectly at Goerzwerk's production facility in Berlin.
The high proportion of production work done by hand underlines the manufacturer’s exceptional standards regarding the reliability and future-oriented durability of its products. As this article also shows, all locking systems are given a trial run before leaving production – each individual cylinder and key is manually and personally tested to ensure its functionality. A quality standard that is anything but a matter of course in the industry.
