Discreet functionality: ASSA ABLOY develops concealed driver flap

So-called driver flaps are primarily used on double-leaf fire and smoke protection doors and ensure that both door leaves can be opened via the inactive leaf in the event of danger. However, many driver flaps only allow installation on the outside of the door leaf, which impairs the appearance of high-quality doors in particular. ASSA ABLOY has therefore developed a solution that is concealed in the door rebate.

“Security technology doesn't have to be beautiful, it has to work.” - This was a credo that was followed for a long time when designing escape route and fire protection technology. But the demand for products that meet all requirements but are less prominent and can be integrated harmoniously into architectural concepts is increasing. ASSA ABLOY is therefore also constantly developing established technologies like the driver flap to provide even better and more appealing solutions.

There is no change to the tried-and-tested function: If both door leaves are closed and the inactive leaf is opened, a device is required that also opens the active leaf. This takes place via the release lever of the driver flap. Opening the door leaves activates the door sequence control. If both door leaves swing closed again, it ensures the correct sequence of closing. However, the key difference between the A105 driver flap and conventional solutions is that the smooth look of the door is completely retained, as all components are invisible from the outside in the rebate space.

The set, consisting of a counter plate and a mounting plate with release lever, can be attached to the left/right in accordance with DIN and is equally suitable for metal and wooden doors. In the latter, the mounting geometry for the driver flap can be milled into the profile – retrofitting is also possible. Requirements for this are hinge distances of less than 2800 mm and a door leaf thickness of at least 55 mm. The use of a top locking system with different backsets in the inactive leaf is also not an obstacle, as the driver plate has a corresponding recess for this purpose. The different rebate geometry in metal systems is compensated by an adapter plate adapted to the profile, to which the trigger lever is then screwed. The adapter plate ensures the screw connection in the metal and not in the thermal separation of the profile. It is also possible to use a top locking device here. If appropriate proof of suitability of the relevant doors is available, the system made entirely of metal is also suitable for use on fire, smoke protection and escape doors.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Can be mounted invisibly in the rebate space
  • No damage to the surface of the door leaf
  • Can be retrofitted
  • Installation prepared for vertical top locking systems on inactive leaf with different backsets
  • Can be combined with concealed and surface-mounted ASSA ABLOY door closers
  • Can be used on fire and smoke protection doors as well as escape doors
  • Installation DIN left/DIN right
  • For doors with hinge distances up to 2800 mm
  • Min. door leaf thickness for wooden doors: 55 mm
  • Mounting plates adapted to profile systems
  • Completely metal design
  • Usage areas: Public buildings, hotels, offices, residential buildings, private homes, etc.

The new driver flaps is distributed by ASSA ABLOY (Schweiz) AG on the Swiss market only.
