20 pins for more options – cable transitions for modern door systems

Door systems are becoming ever more complex. More and more frequently, multiple electrical devices are being installed in a door leaf instead of just one. Two or more cable transitions are required for this. This means additional work during assembly, space issues due to the door hinges and difficulties with approval for fire doors. ASSA ABLOY (Schweiz) AG has an elegant solution for this with the 20-pin cable transitions.

“If a motorised lock, a sensor strip and a biometric access control are installed on a door, for example, a large number of pins are required. With the 20-pin cable transitions, we not only solve the space issue, but also remove the difficulties with approval for fire doors. They combine all functions in a single element. This means that the stability of the door is retained and the door is not weakened by multiple cable transitions”, explains Matthias Walter, Product Manager at ASSA ABLOY (Schweiz) AG. Cable breakage is prevented with the proven technology with terminal plug connection and integrated flex cable. ASSA ABLOY has confirmed that this method can also withstand high levels of stress in an endurance test with a million load cycles. Pins 1 and 2, as well as 3 and 4, can be bridged with two jumpers, which doubles the cross-section of these pins. This simplifies the further wiring to other components, as it is not necessary to connect two cables under one terminal.

Smaller trough for easier assembly

The cable transitions make installation easier, as the trough now has a width of 24 mm even in the short version. Many profile systems work with a 24 mm profile groove. Striking plates and faceplates are often common in this dimension. The new width reduces the milling work on the door. The cable transitions are supplied with an installation trough on both sides or with an installation trough on one side for metal, wood and plastic profiles. Radius end pieces can also be used for time-saving installation in wood profiles.

Everyone benefits from pluggable cable transitions

Door manufacturers can produce and supply the frame and door separately thanks to the cable transitions. It is possible to check the function of the electric components in the factory on this interface. The installer at the construction site is able to install the door leaf and frame separately with no electrical knowledge required on the part of the installer. The terminal plug connection on the frame side can be used for direct connection to the building installation without having to install a junction box in between. For repair work, the service technician simply disconnects the door leaf from the frame. No electrical knowledge is required. The installer can resolve a fault on the door system quickly by simply connecting maintenance and diagnostic equipment to the interface to the building installation.
