Challenge

With the Franklinturm, an SBB real estate project, Zurich’s Oerlikon district got another groundbreaking, modern building, which has a total of 14,800 mof space for offices, law firms, medical practices, a fitness center, restaurants, and retail stores.

The design for the 80 m high building by the renowned architectural firm Armon Semadeni Architekten features a striking facade and exciting proportions. Together with the neighboring Andreasturm, the Franklinturm forms the new skyline of the prosperous district.

A diverse usage concept, the needs of the different tenant groups, and the central location in direct proximity to the busy Oerlikon train station were the key factors in selecting the optimal locking solution.

Solution

The KESO Integra locking system was implemented as a basic platform and expanded to include other central components from the ASSA ABLOY product range to meet the desire of the tenants and operating company for maximum flexibility in access management as well as reliable security.

The mechatronic access control system offers exceptional flexibility. In addition to the digital system, mechanical locking systems can be incorporated and easily expanded on request.

With KESO Integra, access authorizations can be immediately issued or changed digitally by the facility management. This means that employees can easily be assigned individual access authorizations, suppliers can gain access to defined areas of the building outside opening hours, and access to semi-public traffic areas can also be intelligently controlled.

To meet the increased security requirements in the area of the train station, one of the world’s most secure cylinders – the KESO 8000Ω2 – was installed in around 480 doors. The mechanical cylinders with patented active copy protection are compatible with the mechatronic and electronic components of the deployed KESO Integra platform.

RFID chips integrated into the keys provide tenants with additional usage options, such as connection to their own time recording systems or the use of beverage and snack vending machines.

Electric locks from the effeff and MSL brands offer additional protection against unauthorized access thanks to their self-locking feature. In an emergency, the locks can be opened using the available panic device.
