Why it pays off to invest in mechatronic or electronic security technology

Many companies still have purely mechanical locking systems installed and are facing the prospect of converting to a mechatronic or electronic locking system as part of modernisation measures. These systems are a future-proof alternative, offering great flexibility and ease of management. Thomas Volkart, Head of Product Management at ASSA ABLOY (Schweiz) AG, explains the benefits and added value of the innovative locking solutions.

Mechatronic and electronic security solutions offer many advantages over purely mechanical systems. The mechanical keys are replaced by chip cards, transponders or electronic keys – even operation via your own smartphone is possible. Lost keys can be easily blocked using software-based management, and access authorisations can be assigned, adapted, and revoked at any time – even if there is a long distance between the buildings. With optional time restrictions, these innovative locking systems also prevent misuse or unauthorised access, which significantly increases building security overall.

Safe, flexible and convenient

As modular systems with a wide range of cylinders, locking systems such as KESO Integra or KESO eCLIQ are regarded as highly future-proof. They are extremely scalable and adaptable with thousands of cylinders – from stand-alone to offline and purely online solutions. The KESO Integra access control system can also optionally combine existing mechanical systems with mechatronic components. This offers extraordinary flexibility, which is particularly in demand among operators of critical infrastructures with highly sensitive security areas.

The cylinders can also usually be replaced easily due to the identical designs: Out with mechanical, in with mechatronic or electronic. This is a particular advantage when renovating existing locking systems. For example, when using eCLIQ cylinders or Integra cylinders with mounted electronics, tested or certified doors can also be upgraded under certain conditions, as no structural modifications such as subsequent wiring are necessary when installing the new cylinders.

If a mechatronic or electronic locking system is in use, software-based management comes into its own. In addition to the user-friendly programming and deprogramming of individual access authorisations, it is also very easy to create different roles and group functions for individual doors or people. Here’s an example: A maths teacher has to teach a P.E. lesson at short notice. If the "P.E." role has been created in the management, the teacher’s key can be authorised for all cylinders assigned to the role with a single click. During the next revalidation of his key, he can then unlock the sports hall and changing rooms with the same key. With Integra NOK+, in addition to the wall reader, the revalidation can also take place virally when opening a door that has already been used.

Another relevant topic that highlights the added value of mechatronic or purely electronic locking systems is the convenient options for seamless documentation and tracking of locking events, as well as the integration into a smart building management system. Software solutions such as k-entry not only include predefined wizards to make installation easier, but entire building plans can now also be imported into the overviews and networked.

The right solution for every requirement

Important to know: The selection of a suitable system always depends on the individual requirements, regardless of whether they arise from legal, structural or administrative specifications. And there is a suitable solution for all requirements in the ASSA ABLOY (Schweiz) AG portfolio.
