Career and Professional Development of Oliver Schmidlin

When Oliver began his four-year apprenticeship as a tool mechanic, now known as a polymechanic, at MSL in 1992, he likely could hardly have imagined working for the same employer 30 years later. Originally, he only planned to stay for a few years after the apprenticeship to gain some experience. But he never regretted that things turned out differently – on the contrary.

Today, the 45-year-old is training three apprentices and is responsible for bucking and riveting in the plant, where devices are manufactured in addition to various bending and specialized tools. In these roles, he is responsible, for example, for the production of the MSL eBar in the field of escape route technology. "I enjoyed the work and I was able to gradually take on more responsibility. In 2001, I was given the chance to follow in the footsteps of my instructor at the time. Soon after, I became team leader in toolmaking. Since then, the years have flown by," Oliver reports.

Oliver's decision to continue his career with ASSA ABLOY was driven by the company's support through various workshops and professional training programs, which enabled him to continuously expand his knowledge and skills. Then as now, he was also delighted by the autonomy he was given and the great variety that his everyday work entails: "One day I spend a lot of time working with computers, another with the students, to whom I can teach something new. I also really appreciate the trust my employer has placed in me. I can work independently as long as everything is running smoothly, deadlines are met and the quality is right," Schmidlin points out.
