As a trained carpenter and qualified engineer for wood technology, Jochen Schaar knows exactly how many requirements are placed on a door design. Following his training and studies, he first expanded his technical know-how in the development department of various door manufacturers before being led to ASSA ABLOY in 2008. As Head of Services, he is in close contact with customers in order to mutually find the optimum solution in terms of drop-down seals and finger protection.
Because door seals not only keep out the uncontrolled spread of odors and cold air, but also keep noise at a distance, an important part of Jochen Schaar’s work takes place in the sound laboratory. There, he advises customers such as door manufacturers who visit the laboratory to determine the airborne sound insulation of door leaves and doors when installed. His extensive knowledge of materials helps him with this, as wooden doors in particular – depending on the design and price segment – are often made of various materials. In addition, the acoustic properties of glass and metal doors as well as partition walls are also examined in Richterswil.
"Most of the time, the special cases end up on my desk. That is, everything we offer our customers outside of the standard range," reports Jochen Schaar. In this context, he describes as particularly challenging the work on seals for arched doors, which require perfect interaction between customers, planning and production: "It is important that internal processes work well and that we support each other. In operations such as in Richterswil, many colleagues are involved in the processes across departments."
It is this team spirit and the variety of daily tasks that Jochen Schaar really appreciates about his work: "Each project brings its own challenges and requires not only technical knowledge but also a great deal of sensitivity to the customer’s needs. This and the personal, congenial and human working environment in which I am able to work motivate me every day to do my best."
