In 1962, Reg Smith and his compatriots at Alice Springs Meteorological Bureau proposed they hold an actual regatta along the lines of the famous Henley-on-Thames, a race between Cambridge and Oxford Universities. The idea was taken up by the Rotary Club of Alice Springs, and the fact that the town was 1500km’s from the nearest large body of water was never seen as a problem.
The ASSA ABLOY Henley-on-Todd regatta is a true celebration of irreverent Australian humour based on just general good fun. Victoria Police Crime Prevention Officers today collected a pallet of padlocks from ASSA ABLOY, parent company of Lockwood, which has supported Victoria Police’s Neighbourhood Watch program for past 25 years.
Crime Prevention Officers will deliver the padlocks to bushfire relief sites so they can be distributed to victims who want to secure trailers, sheds or other means of storage, and larger carry-away items.
Glen Eira Crime Prevention Officer leading Senior Constable Peter Stefaniw said he last week approached the company for a donation of padlocks after hearing that bushfire victims were concerned about their remaining valuables.
“While we’ve had no reports of theft in fire affected areas, a lot of victims are worried that they are vulnerable,” LSC Stefaniw said.
“These victims have already suffered enough and should not have to worry about the security of their belongings.
“While police are manning roadblocks and patrolling fire affected areas, I thought we had to help increase the perception of public safety. This seemed to make sense – people want some way of feeling secure so they can focus on rebuilding.”
In addition to the donation of padlocks, ASSA ABLOY employees have raised in excess of $12,000 towards the Bush Fire appeal, adding to the $50,000 donation already pledged by ASSA ABLOY Australia.
