Aperio wireless technology secures doors at much lower cost than wired locks

Challenge

With multiple sites in the Randstad region, the InHolland University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest providers of higher professional education in The Netherlands. A rolling (and ongoing) project began in 2013 to extend access control at all InHolland locations. As in any large educational setting, the tension between remaining open and accessible on the one hand — and securing people, equipment and data on the other — is a critical consideration.

Requirements

∙ Tested and trusted protection for the university’s most important sites and rooms, including offices, technical areas and exam storage spaces ∙ Inherent flexibility, making it easy to adjust spaces protection status, because this is regularly reconfigured

∙ Affordability, a criterion which ruled out deploying wired electronic locks to protect these sites

∙ The ability to roll out any solution over time, as InHolland’s needs, budgets and priorities evolve

Solution

More than 500 Aperio wireless door locking devices have now been deployed at 7 separate InHolland campus sites spread around The Netherlands. Because Aperio devices are wireless, they were installed and initiated quickly and affordably, without disruption to InHolland buildings or the students’ working day. The ongoing cost of running these battery-operated wireless locks is also much lower than for equivalent wired electronic locks, which require an ‘always on’ connection to mains electricity to maintain secure status.

Fitting Aperio wireless escutcheons and locks to critical doors ensures staff, students, visitors and confidential information are safe without impacting the university’s accessibility. Authorised site users open relevant secure doors conveniently with a programmable RFID credential. Based on their experience to date with Aperio, InHolland are already planning for the future.

A new university in Amsterdam will become a smart building and will require access control able to integrate with smart building systems. Aperio is built on an open platform, designed for interoperability, so this is a natural fit. InHolland will enter pilot stage for their new smart building soon.
